I had seen her lying in front of the welder’s garage. What breed of dog was she? Probably a husky mix, but she had a spiral deer tail and was very, very thin.
As I had done with many dogs on the street, I began to take food to her so that she could gain weight. However, after a few days, I noticed that she was injured. She had been hit by a car and her back was cut down the middle with skin hanging on both sides! I talked to the welder, who said he was the owner, to see if he was going to take her to the vet. He said it was too expensive. I asked him to help me to get her in my car and I would take him to my vet, but the dog would not let the welder near. I prayed that she would let me pick her up and amazingly she did.
My vet is a wonderful man with more than 40 years of experience. He gave her the works: stiching, vaccinating, deworming, neutering and even bathing this curious deer dog. I had another dog at the time who was extremly jealous of any other dog so I looked for a home for Bambi. A lady I met briefly decided to take her home. However, Bambi is an extremly social dog and her new owner was never home, so she began to dig in her garden. I was given the keys to fix the holes while the owner was at work and often I would find Bambi chained up. Soon she was not only digging holes, but caverns. The garden was destroyed and after a year, the owner decided that Bambi would never change and she returned her to me. What a happy day!
It Was Time to Bring Her Home
Over the year I often brought her to my home and my dog Laika learned to be her friend. So when Bambi came to live with us permanently, I wondered why I hadn’t done this from the beginning. I have several rescue cats as well and Bambi quickly learned that they were her friends too. So since she no longer was alone, she no longer dug holes. When I take Bambi for her walks, usually six cats follow her for the outing. When people stop on the street to admire the sight I just tell them, “If they can do it, why can’t we?” More photos of Bambi here
